Transport, Highways and Mass Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana stressed that his support at the next Presidential Election will be given to a candidate who has the capability and willingness to take forward the current agreed programme to recover the country from the economic crisis.

“No one can save this country outside of this programme. Therefore, I would like to declare that irrespective of positions and perks promised to me, my support at the next Presidential Election will not be given to a candidate who will work against the current programme to recover the country from the economic crisis”.

He was speaking at the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Homagama constituency members meeting yesterday. Establishing party branches and a membership drive too was held in Homagama under the patronage of Minister Dr.Bandula Gunawardhana.

The Minister speaking at the event said, “When working as a Party, we should work with discipline without personal agendas. After Mahinda Rajapaksa assumed duties as President, he faced the challenge of making Sri Lanka a country where Sinhalese, Tamil and Muslim citizens could live without discrimination of caste and religion. As a politician, I am happy to have contributed to that national mission”.

“We were able to add historical value to every vote given for it. Looking at the future of politics, we formed Parties where we needed to form Parties and broke Parties where we needed to break Parties. For the first time in history, under the Chandrika Kumaratunga Government, a negative economic growth was recorded.

I took the first step to leave that Government which was bad for the country and went to the Opposition. Many people who do not know the history of politics do not know about this. We did not think twice to always stand by the people for the country”.

“At this time when the country has fallen economically, I would like to declare that we will not abandon this journey until we uplift the country back to its former status. We are always engaged in national politics”.

“Many are pointing fingers at various parties for the collapse of the economy. This situation has arisen due to an unscientific economic journey that has no basis. This is not due to politicians. The country has become bankrupt due to two economic reasons. One is the current account deficit of the State budget.

The tax revenue collected from all the people of the country in the year 2022 in different ways is Rs.1,979 billion. Out of that, Rs. 956 million have been paid as Government employee salaries. Rs.309 billion has been paid as pension. 63% of the country’s total tax revenue is spent on salaries and pensions. Rs. 815 billion will be spent on Samurdhi and other subsidies. Rs.1,565 billion should be paid as loan interest.

The total is Rs.3,645 billion. Then there will be a budget deficit of Rs.1,666 billion. A large amount of money has been taken as a loans both domestically and internationally to cover that gap”.

“The second point is the current account deficit in the balance of payments. More than the income received from the total exports of money is spent on importing food, machinery, fuel, etc., which are necessary for daily consumption”.

“Regardless of who gets power, there should be a proper plan on how to bridge this gap. In order to save the country from the debt crisis, no Government can run without working according to the agreements with the International Monetary Fund. The country cannot advance even an inch without getting foreign loan assistance. The princes, who are preparing to overthrow the Government without knowing any of this, should declare to the country whether they have a plan in this regard”.

“No one can save this motherland outside of this system. Therefore, I would like to declare that my support will not be given to a candidate who will work against the current agreed programme to recover the country from the economic crisis in the upcoming Presidential Election irrespective of what kind of positions and perks promised”.

“As a Party the first thing we should to do to save the country is to choose a candidate who can achieve these goals. For that, we should organise with proper understanding,” he said.

Former Minister, MP Gamini Lokuge, MP Jayantha Ketagoda, former Homagama Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Sampath Jayasinghe and a large gathering of party activists attended.
