A child who was on his way to school yesterday morning (9), had fainted and fallen on the road and died after being admitted to Horana Base Hospital. This child has to walk a distance of 500 meters to take a bus to go to school and he had fallen while walking to the bus stop. The deceased Prabuddha Prabashwara Handapangoda was a Grade six student of Horana Vidyaratne Vidyalaya and a resident of Govinna, Kobawaka Colony. The child’s father had not been there yesterday, so the student had been walking alone to get to school, when he faced this accident near his home.
The investigation regarding the death of this student was held yesterday (9) and a relative of the child, Wele Gedera Anura Rathna Bandara (49) said: When I looked, the child was lying on the ground in the middle of the road with his head on top of his school bag. The bottle of water and his cap were in the grass on the side of the road. I called him son, but he did not speak, so I picked up the child and went to Ranj brother’s house nearby.
The dead child is arelative of mine. I visit his house often. As far as I know, the child was not suffering from any illness. On November 9 at around 5.30 in the morning, I came to work on my scooty type motorcycle. As I was travelling, I saw a child lying on the ground in the middle of the road, a little way beyond the house belonging to Ranji. I stopped the motorcycle and looked at him.Then I recognized the boy as the eldest child of Dhammika Dharmapriya. After that I got down from the motorcycle and attended to the child. The child was lying on the ground with his head on the school bag. The bottle of water and cap were in the grass on the roadside.
I spoke to him but he did not respond, then I picked up the child and went to Ranji brother’s house nearby. I laid him down on the armchair in front of the house. After that I went to Dhammika’s house to give the message about the child and to ask them to come and see the child. I went and brought the child’s mother to the house. I left her and went to work. While I was working, Lal, a person fromour village called and told me that the child had died. Handapangodage Dhammika Dharmapriya (48).
The child’s mother also gave evidence and the post-mortem examination was conducted by Horana District Hospital Judicial Medical Officer Dr.Paneetha Seneviratne. According to the evidence presented and the medical reports, Horana Coroner Sumedha Gunawardena ordered the Bulathsinhala Police to send body parts of the deceased child to the Government Analyst and obtain a report.
