Namal queries NOCSL on shortcomings at Tokyo Games
After the event, the Sports Minister said that he had requested a report from the National Olympic Committee (NOCSL) with regard to the number of officials who accompanied the nine athletes to the Tokyo Olympics and why the athletes failed to carry the National Logo on their kits.
“I have requested a report from the NOCSL with regard to the delegation that went to the Olympics and why the athletes didn’t wear the kits which consisted of the Lankan Emblem.”
“At the outset, to the list of names sent to us, the Sports Ministry and the Sports Council jointly informed them that funds will be allocated only for the athletes and important officials.”
“We saw some instances where officials represented instead of coaches. As a responsible ministry we will definitely conduct an inquiry and take necessary action from our side.”
“I hope that the related Associations and Organisations will react transparently and responsibly,” the Minister told the Media.
“We saw the Sri Lanka para athletes conduct their practices as a group very systematically and to perfection. We have extended our fullest support to them.” “We know all associations, including the NOCSL, are independent bodies. Whilst respecting their independence there have been several lapses on certain occasions. As a responsible ministry, we strongly believe that we should spend funds only on athletes, coaches and approved managers.”
With regard to the athletes failing to wear the National Emblem on their kits, the Minister further added: “Here again, I have requested a report from the NOCSL why it happened.”
“From this incident, what we have learnt is that a code of conduct should be implemented for the athletes. In addition to the newly formulated Sports Law, we will also have to get this code of conduct approved in Parliament, which we plan to do by January next year.”
