Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) National Organiser and MP Namal Rajapaksa has questioned whether the law will be applied equally to Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasooriya and Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera.
Addressing Parliament, Rajapaksa questioned what action would be taken against the IGP over allegations that he had disregarded a court order and provided false information to court in connection with cases filed against innocent individuals.
Referring to the conviction of Ven. Gnanasara Thera for contempt of court, Rajapaksa questioned whether the same legal standards would be applied to the IGP.
He pointed out that the Government had repeatedly pledged to ensure equal application of the law, irrespective of an individual’s position or status.
“The President has said that the law is equal for everyone. We are waiting to see what happens to the IGP,” he said.
Meanwhile, Rajapaksa criticised the Government’s approach to combating narcotics, claiming that its focus on arrests and remanding suspects had failed to address the root causes of drug trafficking.
He argued that setting daily arrest targets for police officers was ineffective, adding that authorities should instead focus on individuals responsible for importing and distributing narcotics while providing rehabilitation for drug-dependent individuals.
The MP also raised concerns over prison overcrowding, claiming that the increasing number of arrests had placed additional pressure on the prison system.
He further questioned the effectiveness of ongoing anti-drug operations, pointing out that narcotics remained available and shooting incidents continued despite reports of major drug and firearm seizures.
Rajapaksa also highlighted the shortage of prison officers and called for improved working conditions, risk allowances and greater support for the families of officers who had died in the line of duty. (Newswire)
