National level programmes launched to eradicate dengue

The Health Ministry has planned to implement a series of national level programmes countrywide in accordance with the guidance of the President and the advice of Health and Industry Minister Dr. Ramesh Pathirana to strengthen dengue mosquito control activities.

These special programmes will be implemented from next Sunday (7) to cover the entire country, focusing on dengue risk areas.

A preliminary discussion on the implementation of this programme was held at the Health Ministry under the patronage of Health Secretary Dr. Palitha Mahipala and Director General of Health Services Dr. Asela Gunawardena on Wednesday (3).

It was decided to establish Dengue Mosquito Control District Committees at the district level, and to start the premises inspection from Sunday.

This special programme will be carried out at the centres of all the health and medical offices countrywide, and the Sri Lanka Police, Armed Forces, Civil Defence Force, Dengue Mosquito Control Assistants and Community Health Teams, Village Committee Members, Village Officers and Development Officers will also be involved in the inspection of premises.

Accordingly, the Health Secretary requests the people to give maximum support to the officials who come to inspect the premises and to clean their premises daily.

Acting Inspector General of Police Deshbandu Tennakoon, Major General P. P. A. Perera representing the Army, Captain D. A. Ediriweera and Captain C. L. Peliarachchi representing the Navy, Dengue Control Unit Director Dr. Sudath Samaraweera and National Dengue Control Unit Community Health Specialist Dr. Nimalka Pannilahetti were also present.
