Justice Minister Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe told Parliament yesterday that national unity is vital for the development of the country.
The minister stated that the government is currently taking measures to strengthen national unity by establishing village level societies to ensure reconciliation and the support of the religious leaders and village heads including the temples of the villages is required to make that process a success. The Minister said this while presenting the Office for National Unity and Reconciliation Bill and the National Hydrology Bill for the Second Reading.
The minister also said that the first Parliament sitting of this year begins with the presentation of the Office for National Unity and Reconciliation Bill that will create peace and reconciliation. Former President Chandrika Kumaratunga started this office during the war. Although it was maintained administratively, it had no constitutional recognition. But that institution was operating in the country for a long time. That office has done a great service to bring about national harmony.
National unity is very important. The people of the country are suffering at this time. This office is assigned to implement a large part of work at the village level, national level and rural level. Basically, this is expected to create harmony in the village.
