Navy assists MRCC to transfer ill fisherman to Hospital
The Sri Lanka Navy rendered assistance to bring ashore a critically ill fisherman, who was aboard a local multi-day fishing trawler, southwest of Sri Lanka, about 78 nautical miles (144km) off the Galle Lighthouse.
After being brought ashore on Wednesday (20), on being coordinated by the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Colombo, he was rushed to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital by the Navy. The local multi-day fishing trawler ‘Thewjan Putha’ (Reg No. IMUL-A- 1043 GLE) was reported to have left the Ambalangoda Fisheries Harbour with six fishermen on Sunday (17) on a fishing voyage. Meanwhile, the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DFAR) alerted MRCC Colombo established in the Navy Headquarters that a crew member onboard the fishing trawler has developed a chest pain, and requested Navy’s assistance to transfer him ashore for treatment, due to his condition. In response to the alert, the Navy, in coordination with the MRCC Colombo, made arrangements to bring the ill fisherman ashore, deploying a Fast Attack Craft from the Southern Naval Command. The Fast Attack Craft brought him ashore while administering first aid and the Navy subsequently rushed the ill fisherman who was in critical condition, to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital, for medical attention.
