Navy brings ashore injured fisherman in southern seas for medical attention.

The Sri Lanka Navy on 21 August 2023 brought ashore an injured fisherman who had sustained injuries following a brawl while aboard a local multiday fishing trawler. Upon being brought ashore, he was transferred to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital for medical attention.

The multiday fishing trawler named ‘Sapna 08’ (Reg. No. IMUL-A-1004 TLE) with six crew members on board set sail from the Kudawella fisheries harbour on 17 August for fishing. During a brawl among the fishermen aboard, one of them got hurt with cuts around his neck and was in critical situation. Meanwhile, the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, alerted the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Colombo, located at the Navy Headquarters, about the situation.

Responding to the urgent situation, the Navy directed SLCG Samaraksha of the Sri Lanka Coast Guard in the Southern Naval Command to the designated sea area to bring the patient ashore. The fisherman in critical condition was safely transferred to SLCG Samaraksha yesterday (21 August) in southern waters. The ship then proceeded towards the Galle harbour and the Navy also administered crucial first aid to the patient aboard. Upon arrival in Galle the patient was swiftly rushed to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital for further treatment.

The Sri Lanka Navy continues to exemplify its dedication and unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives at sea, serving as a beacon of hope and security for seafarers and the fishing community.
