Navy deserter nabbed with ‘Ice’ in Ella, two PCs stabbed in raid

The Ella Police said that two Police Constables were seriously injured and admitted to the Badulla General Hospital after they were attacked by an alleged drug peddler. The incident occurred when a Police team, including the OIC of the Ella Police station, conducted a raid in Meeriyakele in Gotuawala, Ella area early this morning (30).

A Navy deserter who tried to run away after stabbing the two Police officers with a knife was arrested by the other Police officers with great effort. Police said that he was arrested with a hand grenade, six grams of ice drug, two Kriss knives and a Rambo knife. Police said that the arrested 33-year-old Navy deserter is a resident of Maduragama in Gotuwila, Ella who has been already under arrest warrants.

Two Police Constables, aged 29 and 34, who are attached to the Ella Police and reside in the Deniyaya and Uduwara, Hali-ela, have been admitted to the hospital with injuries.

Hospital sources said that these two constables have suffered serious cuts on their neck and back and they will undergo surgery.

Bandarawela Division acting Superintendent B.M.Dasanayake said that the Ella Police OIC, three Constables and a Police driver, faced the situation when they conducted a raid for Ice drugs in Halpe, Gotuwala and Meeriyakele areas early this morning (30). After the Police agents spoke with this drug trafficker on the phone and deposited money through Easy Cash to buy the drugs the Police team had conducted the raid this morning (30) in the guise of buying the Ice drug.

When the suspect tried to escape after stabbing the Police officers, the other Police officers apprehended him with some effort, Police said. Ella Police are conducting further investigations.
