Navy rating arrested over Kudawella murder

Police Special Task Force yesterday arrested a Navy rating in connection with the shooting to death of a multi-day yacht skipper at Tangalle Kudawella recently. Investigation has revealed that he is a resident of Balapitiya and is working in Pulmuddai.

During questioning it has been revealed that the shooting had ben carried out according to a contract given to this Navy soldier by a drug dealer named Dilshan, who is currently in Dubai. Police say that Dilshan is a close associate of Rathgama Vidura, a drug dealer in the South.

Police say that the Navy soldier was on leave when the shooting happened.

On the evening of August 15, the Special Task Force arrested a person travelling in a WagonR car at the Dodangoda exit of the highway. This is after investigation revealed that the shooter was taken to Tangalle from his house in Balapitiya in this WagonR car.

The shooter had got on a motorcycle from Tangalle and had travelled to Kudawella.

It has also been revealed that the motorcycle was driven by a resident of Weligama. The arrested Navy soldier, has said that he got the firearm for the shooting, the day before the murder. He had told Police that after the shooting, when he came to Balapitiya, Dilshan called him and told him to leave the firearm near a lamp post in Balapitiya and accordingly he left the weapon there.

He had also told Police that this is the first time he was involved in such a crime but a senior Police officer said this cannot be believed.

It is also said that the murdered young man has received invitations from drug smugglers on several occasions to transport drugs brought from Pakistan by sea.But it has been revealed that he had rejected all such invitations.

The exact cause of this killing has not been revealed yet. Police believe that an incident related to drug trafficking may be behind the murder.
