Navy relief teams engaging in rescue and relief operations in the face of adverse weather rescued 288 persons in the past 48 hours (from November 8 to 10) in several parts of the island. Upon rescuing those individuals, the Navy has relocated them to safe locations and provided relief measures.
The Sri Lanka Navy has deployed 14 relief teams in Paragoda in Kalutara, New Town of Ratnapura, Udamalattha in Galle, Palaviya, Wanathawilluwa, Eluwankulama, Mannar Road, Kalpitiya, Udubaddawa, Tharawilluwa, Kotadeniyawa, Giriulla in Kurunegala and Rajanganaya in Anuradhapura, covering the Western, Southern, North Central, North Western and Sabaragamuwa Provinces to provide relief measures to the people affected by adverse weather.
Meanwhile, Navy reams rescued 95 flood victims in Palaviya and Karambe in Kalpitiya following torrential rains.
Similarly, another 77 individuals were promptly evacuated as they had been trapped in floods in the locality of Giriulla with the rising of water levels of the Ma Oya. Moreover, the Navy rescue teams reached out to 93 flood victims in Wanathawilluwa, Eluwankulama and Tharawilluwa in Puttalam to rescue them from increasing floodwaters with the swelling water revels of the Kala Oya and Baththulu Oya.
Further, Naval personnel engaging in flood relief operations safely rescued another 23 persons in the Udubaddawa area, affected by the overflowing of the Karambalan Oya.
In the meantime, the Navy has 60 more rescue and relief teams on standby in the Western, Eastern, Southern, North Western and North Central Naval areas for prompt deployment, as required.
