Navy thwarts illegal migration attempt, seven including two facilitators held
A Naval patrol conducted in the Urumalei area, Talaimannar in the dark hours of Sunday (2) led to the apprehension of five Sri Lankans, believed to have attempted to enter into the country by illegal means. The Navy also held two individuals who facilitated this illegal act.
The Navy has been conducting regular operations and patrols covering the sea and coastal areas around the country with the aim of suppressing illegal migration and other forms of illegal activities.
As an extension of these efforts, the night patrol was carried out by SLNS Thammanna in the North Central Naval Command, in the Urumalei area on Sunday (2). Upon interrogation of five persons suspiciously remaining in the area, it was revealed that they had migrated by illegal means. Along with those five individuals, two more persons who facilitated them were also taken into Naval custody.
The apprehended individuals who are from 27 to 42 years of age were identified as Sri Lankans from Mannar, Vavuniya and Talaimannar. They will be handed over to the Talaimannar Police for onward legal action.
