Need to increase rural awareness of pitfalls of foreign employment
The Sectoral Oversight Committee (SOC) on Foreign Employment and Labour discussed the importance of practical training for those seeking foreign employment to obtain the maximum benefits of such employment.
The committee met in the Parliament under the Chairmanship of Parliamentarian Hector Appuhamy. The Chairman of the Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau stated that a manual containing information related to foreign employment has been produced for gramasewaka officials, officials of divisional secretariats, field officers as well as people’s representatives.
It will provided in print and online, for officials as well as those seeking foreign employment.
The problem of people in rural areas not having access to accurate information regarding foreign employment and thus falling prey to fraudulent agencies or agents was also discussed. The committee discussed that it is important to get official representation from the Labour and Foreign Employment Ministry when making investment decisions for the Employees’ Provident Fund.
Members of Parliament Dilan Perera, Faisal Qasim, S.M. Marikkar, Ishak Rahuman, Samanpriya Herath, Gamini Waleboda and Velu Kumar were present at the meeting.
