Sri Lanka’s Nevan Kannangara and Akesha Silva secured their final spots in the ATF Under-14 Junior Week-1 Tennis Tournament, continued at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) Courts in Green Path, Colombo yesterday.
Kannangara staged a fine comeback to beat the more experienced David Avayou from Canada in a rain-curtailed three-setter in the Boys’ Under-14 semi-finals.
Kannangara dropped the opening set 0-4 but he recovered immediately and avenged that defeat to blank his opponent 4-0 in the second set before adding the finishing touches with a 4-1 triumph in the decider.
Kannangara will now meet Calvin Jonathan in the Boys’ Under-14 final after the Indonesian defeated Lem Hao Greth of Malaysia in straight sets in the other semi-final.
Meanwhile, Akesha Silva cruised into the Girls’ Under-14 final with a straight set win over her teammate Eliza Kahagalla in the semi-finals. She set up a final meeting with Aishath Karin of the Maldives, who had the better of Sri Lankan Diyana Vithanage in the other semi-final.
