New Anti-Corruption Act will hinder bribery, corruption – Dr. Mahanamahewa
Law Professor, Attorney Dr. Prathibha Mahanamahewa said that in parallel with the government’s programme of introducing stronger rules and regulations than the existing ones to catch thieves, what is necessary at this time is to quickly bring in the necessary rules and regulations for sustainable economic growth and empower the economy.
During the two years of the current President’s leadership, more than 75 new laws have been introduced and the legal system has been strengthened, the professor said.
He said that the country’s legal system has been strengthened through the new Anti-Corruption Act. Accordingly, he pointed out that bribery and corruption not only in government institutions, but even in private sector institutions are addressed.
He pointed out that steps can be taken to curb those weaknesses. It is very necessary for a country like Sri Lanka to bring in new investments. In addition to domestic investments, foreign direct investments should be brought. Before coming to our country, foreign investors who are motivated for this, find out where our country is in the world anti-corruption index. If it is in a lower place, their arrival will be delayed. Otherwise they will not come at all. Even the International Monetary Fund has recently imposed strict conditions on us to stop corruption. Because of this, the legal reforms taken by the current government are very important.
In order to win some investment, the services of a number of government agencies should be obtained. Permissions should also be obtained. Incidents of bribery and corruption should be avoided while obtaining these. The new anti-corruption act has made it possible to prevent such things happening not only in government institutions but also in private institutions. It should work successfully.
