New facelift for Matara Fort, Riverside Park

Steps have been taken to lease out and manage the facilities of the Riverside Park, which has been built in the centre of Matara City with the Nilwala river bank as the background, to the private sector in such a way that the profits are divided equally between the Matara Municipal Council and the Urban Development Authority. Also, steps have been taken to expedite the reopening of the Riverside Park for the public.

This decision had been made during a discussion held regarding the planning of the Matara City, at the Presidential Secretariat under the patronage of Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera and Chief of Staff to the President and Senior Advisor to the President on National Security Sagala Ratnayaka.

In addition, the entrance to the Matara Fort will be conserved in an attractive manner and the two ancient buildings located within the Fort, the land office building and the Matara Fort Stadium will be modernized and developed including a museum, restaurant and other facilities. These will be managed by the Mathota Heritage Foundation and the Mathota Heritage New Draft Bill will be prepared and it has been decided to open it to the public by February next year.

The Akuressa new bus stand also will be modernized and rebuilt at the place where it is, as a public and private partnership investment and the upper floors will be developed with shops and trade stalls. This was also decided to be carried out once plans are prepared.

MP Karunadasa Kodituwakku, Southern Province Governor Willie Gamage, Government Agent of Matara Y. Wickremasinghe and public officials were present.
