The newly constructed five‑storey maternity and surgical ward complex at the Monaragala District General Hospital will be vested with the public on Thursday (04), under the patronage of Minister of Health Nalinda Jayatissa.

According to the Ministry of Health, built at a cost of over Rs. 857 million, the facility includes maternity wards on the ground and first floors, women’s surgical wards on the second and third floors, and plans for four modern operating theatres equipped with advanced medical technology on the fourth floor.

The project forms part of a larger Rs. 2.9 billion investment by the Ministry of Health to expand healthcare infrastructure in Monaragala, home to more than half a million people.

Established in 1876 as a central dispensary, the hospital was upgraded to a base hospital in 1990 and designated a district general hospital in 2005. Despite its status, inadequate building facilities had long posed challenges for both patients and medical staff.

Construction of the new complex began in 2019 but was halted midway. Minister Jayatissa later directed that the project be treated as a priority, leading to its completion.

The Health Ministry added that the new facility is expected to significantly improve healthcare services for the people of Uva Wellassa, with modern operating theatres to be installed in the near future. (Newswire)
