The Registration of Persons Department has planned to introduce new Unique Digital ID for all Sri Lankan citizens above 15 years.
A Department spokesman said the digital identity card is set to digitalise the process of submitting accurate details of all the citizens and enable the presentation of information on the ID cards of individuals in a simpler manner.
In addition to the biometric information, the ID also includes fingerprints, the iris and a photo of the holder.
The project is being implemented under the financial assistance of the Indian government.
“ICTA is in the process of developing software and have provided the proof of concept to collect the biometric information of the people,” he stated.
“Once this process is completed, it is expected to issue new ID to over 17 million citizens within one year and six months,” he added.
