The Nilwala River has again started flooding the overflow channels. On October 11, floods have recurred due to the torrential rain that fell in Deniyaya, Morawake, Pitabeddara, Akuressa and other areas throughout the day.
Panadugama water gauge shows 6.92 at 10.30 a.m., on October 12 and the discharge level is 6.40. Akurassa – Athuraliya – Kadduwa – Malimbada – Kamburupitiya – Bangama – Siambalagoda – Makandura – Dediyagala etc., roads are all flooded. All traffic has come to a standstill. Passenger buses are not plying and other vehicular traffic has been rerouted through forested roads.
Some places in the Paraduwa area on the Akuressa-Matara main road have also been flooded.
According to the report, landslides too have occurred in places.
Athuraliya Divisional Secretary Nirosha Gamage mentions that they have received the support of Navy officers to prepare food for the families trapped by the floods in Athuraliya and distribute it to the necessary places and all the organizational work is done by Athuraliya Disaster Service Officer Theekshana Wickramaratne.
