Nimal Siripala sworn in as Ports, Shipping and Aviation Minister

Nimal Siripala de Silva was sworn in as Ports, Shipping and Aviation Minister yesterday after being acquitted of the recent bribery allegations against him, the President’s Media Division said.

The three-member committee appointed by President Ranil Wickremesinghe on the request of former minister Nimal Siripala de Silva to probe bribery allegations has acquitted him of the charges.

The committee handed over its report to the Secretary to the President Saman Ekanayake on Sunday.

The chairperson of the investigation committee, retired High Court Judge, President’s Counsel Kusala Sarojani Weerawardena, handed over the committee’s report to the Secretary to the President. The other members of the committee, were retired Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police S.M. Wickremasinghe, and retired special grade officer of the Sri Lanka Administrative Service S.M.G.K. Perera.

Former Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva requested the President to conduct an impartial investigation into the matter raised by the Leader of the Opposition in the Parliament based on the news published in electronic and print media including social media networks that a cabinet minister had asked for a bribe from Japan’s Taisei Corporation.

Accordingly, the President appointed the three-member committee on July 22 and informed the members to submit the report of the investigation to him before July 31.
