Thirteen year old, Nimeshi Gunawardena, a Grade Eight student of Girls’ High School, Kandy is an up and coming Athlete who is interested in becoming a national level athlete in the future and her athletic coach is Chandana Abeyratne. She is involved in the Inter House Individual races and Relay events and the coach says that he is impressed by her dedication towards the relevant sport as she is doing her best to reach a higher standard.

Nimeshi who is in the ‘Lawrence House’ of the school started her Athletic career in the year 2017 and led her team to win most of the athletic meets. In the year 2018 at the Kids’Athletic Championship she won a Gold Medal and in 2019 at the All Island Schools Athletic Championship in the 80 Metre and 100 Metre races she secured the second place.

In the Sir John Tarbet Junior Athletic Championship in 2019 in the Under 12 – 80 Metre and 100 Metre races she secured the second place and again in the same year at the Kids’ Athletic Championship she received a Silver Medal.

In 2019 Nimeshi’s Relay team which consisted of Nimeshi, Minduli, Sandali & Akeesa became third in the 4 x 100 Metre Relay at the All Island Schools Relay Championship and third place in the 4 x 50 metre Sir John Tarbet Junior Championship and again the third place in the 4 x 100 Relay at the All Island School Games in the same year. The team secured the second place in the 4 x 100 Metre Relay event at the Central Province Athletic Meet in 2019 and Nimeshi got the second place in the 80 Metre and 100 Metre races and the Relay team secured the first place and Nimeshi was awarded colours at the award ceremony organized by the Zonal Education Dept. Kandy. In the same year she received a merit certificate too from the school for her achievements in her Individual races.

Nimeshi being a Junior Athlete in the school intends to become a national level Athlete In future and to do her higher studies to become a professional and bring fame to her country.
