Nirekh Tejwani home with a flawless performance, Taniya bags the Gold
The 132nd Sri Lanka Amateur Golf Championships and the Sri Lanka Ladies Amateur Open Golf Championship were worked out at the prestigious Royal Colombo Golf Course recently.
A near hundred golfers participated with a few entries from India. 32 golfers made the cut after the initial rounds with Nirekh teeing off with M.U Chanaka Perera over 36-hole final on the 10th of September.
A ding doing battle ensued with teenager Nirekh turning around at the 18th with a 2-up slender lead. A large gathering was entertained to a sizzling final with Nirekh holding on at the 18th to pip defending champion Chanaka Perera at the post.
Nirekh, fresh from his return with a satisfactory showing at the Junior Open in Scotland played wonderful golf showing maturity beyond his years to be crowned the 132nd Sri Lanka Amateur champion. He became the second member of Royal Colombo Golf Club to secure the Championship after 53 years when legendary Pin Fernando reached that feat.
Taniya Balasuriya continues to perform at the top level amongst the women golfers in Sri Lanka.Taniya along with her younger sister Sherin made it to the finals creating yet another record for the history books.
The women’s final too went to the wire with the experienced Taniya pipping Sherin at the post.
