NMRA Chairman escapes in E-way mishap

A lorry transporting saw dust collided with the jeep of National Medicine Regulatory Authority (NMRA) Chairman Dr. Ananda Wijewickrama, which had stopped on the Southern Expressway due to a technical fault on Wednesday night. Due to the accident traffic was blocked in one lane for about eight hours. The accident occurred on the Southern Expressway between Dodangoda and Gelanigama Interchanges in the Colombo-bound lane. Dr. Ananda Wijewickrima, who was driving the jeep with his wife and sister inside from Galle to Colombo, had stopped the jeep because the left wheel of the jeep was damaged due to a mechanical fault. Dr. Wijewickrema had stopped the vehicle on the side of the road and had come out of the jeep to check what was wrong, and the speeding lorry had collided with the jeep and overturned across the road. Police say that the jeep that collided with the lorry was thrown a few feet forward, but the wife and sister of Dr. Wijewickrema who was inside the vehicle had escaped without any injuries. Dr.Wijewickrema too had narrowly escaped serious injury, Police said. The lorry driver sustained head injuries in the accident. He has been admitted to Bandaragama Hospital.

The Police Media Spokesperson’s Office stated that the lane from Matara to Colombo was blocked due to the accident. Therefore, the section of the road coming to Colombo had to be closed temporarily. This lane of the road was reopened for traffic yesterday morning, eight hours after the accident.
