The Government has not yet held discussions on extending the retirement age of judges, Cabinet Spokesman and Health and Mass Media Minister Nalin Jayatissa said on Tuesday (09).

Responding to a question at the weekly Cabinet media briefing, Jayatissa said that while proposals had been submitted by various professional groups seeking an increase in the retirement age, no such decision had been taken regarding the judiciary.

“There has been no discussion within the Government so far on extending the retirement age of judges,” he said.

Jayatissa noted that requests to increase the retirement age have emerged from several professional sectors due to changing demographic and economic conditions.

“One reason is that life expectancy in our country has increased. In addition, many professionals left the country during the economic crisis and the COVID-19 period. Considering these factors and the experience these professionals possess, proposals have been made from various sectors to explore whether they can continue serving in the public sector for a longer period,” he said.

The minister pointed out that the Government had previously approved an extension of the retirement age for specialist doctors, medical officers and dental surgeons from 60 to 63 years.

“We previously took a decision in the health sector to extend the retirement age of specialist doctors, doctors and dental surgeons from 60 to 63 years. Similar requests have been made by other professional groups as well,” he said.

However, Jayatissa stressed that no proposal or decision regarding the retirement age of judges has been considered by the Government to date.

“Specifically with regard to judges, no such decision has been taken,” he added. (Newswire)
