No final decision to close Udawalawe, Yala Parks – Wildlife DG
Despite the dry weather, no decision has been taken to temporarily close Udawalawe and Yala wildlife parks for tourists, Wildlife Director General Chandana Suriyabandara said. He said that even though there have been discussions about this for the past few days between the officials of the Ministry of Wildlife and the officials of the relevant departments, they have not reached a final decision to close the parks.
The Director General said that the release of water from Samanalawewa Reservoir to Udawalawe Reservoir started at around 3 am yesterday (8) and the stream will pass through the Udawalawe Park and it is believed that this will contribute to the water needs of the animals in the park. Udawalawe and Yala National Parks are usually temporarily closed annually in September of every year.
But this time due to the early onset of dry weather, Wildlife officials had indicated that the concerned parks should be closed. However, the Ceylon Tourism Development Authority has indicated that the closure of the parks will have some impact on the tourism industry.
