No need to hold LG polls in a hurry – UNP General Secretary
The Government will have to come to an agreement with the Election Commission Chairman before Independence Day on conducting the Local Government Elections, United National Party (UNP) General Secretary Palitha Range Bandara said.
“It is appropriate to conduct a Presidential Election on the first instance permitted by the Constitution. The country has been functioning without Local Government representatives for a long time, but the people have not felt their absence. There is no need to hold the Local Government (LG) Elections in a hurry. President Ranil Wickremesinghe is the only leader that the people and the international community have placed their trust at present. What is needed now is strenthening the economy and bringing stability to the country,” he said. Range Bandara was speaking at a press conference at the Sirikotha UNP Headquarters on Tuesday.
He said that the UNP would publish newspaper advertisements on January 1 calling for applications for Electoral Organisers for the upcoming Local Government Elections.
He said new faces who are educated, intelligent and principled would be given priority at the interviews.
