‘No Time To Die’ is losing money?

0 28

James Bond’s studio has hit back at reports that No Time To Die has been losing money, despite its impressive box office haul.

The latest 007 adventure, which was released nearly two months ago in cinemas after numerous pandemic-related delays, recently made over $730m at the global box office, becoming the highest-grossing Hollywood movie this year.

“Unnamed and uninformed sources suggesting the film will lose money are categorically unfounded and, put more simply, not true,” a studio spokesperson said (via Variety).

“The film has far exceeded our theatrical estimates in this timeframe, becoming the highest grossing Hollywood film in the international marketplace and passing F9 to become the highest-grossing Hollywood film since the pandemic.

“With the PVOD [premium video on demand] release of the film already doing stellar home viewing business, all while continuing to hold well theatrically, No Time To Die will earn a profit for MGM, both as an individual film title and as part of MGM’s incredible library.”

It comes after Variety’s report claims from insider sources that while the film cost over $250m to produce, extra numbers including $100m to promote and the price of numerous delays mean the movie would need to make around $900m to break even.

They suggest that No Time To Die would have likely made that haul in normal times, though other sources claim that the loss may not be as high as $100m.

While the latest Bond movie, which is Daniel Craig’s last outing as the spy, is the biggest Hollywood flick of 2021, the highest-grossing global titles of the year so far are Chinese movies The Battle at Lake Changjin and Hi, Mom. Digital Spy
