Four strong earthquakes have struck the Carlsberg Ridge of the Indian Ocean yesterday morning off the Maldives archipelago.
The Carlsberg Ridge is the northern section of the Central Indian Ridge, a divergent tectonic plate boundary between the African Plate and the Indo-Australian Plate.
The Geological Survey and Mines Bureau (GSMB said that there is no tsunami threat to Sri Lanka due to the earthquake in the Indian Ocean.
According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the first quake registered a magnitude of 4.8 and a depth of 10 km, with three subsequent quakes striking at magnitudes 5.2, 5.8 and 5.0, respectively. The second and fourth quakes (magnitudes 5.2 and 5.0) were recorded at a depth of 10 km and the third quake (magnitude 5.8) struck at a depth of 7.7 km.
