Finance State Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya said vehicles imports will not be allowed at this juncture, when the country’s economy is gradually being strengthened.
When he was questioned by the media as to whether the Government is considering lifting the ban on vehicle imports, he said that the Government hasn’t taken such a decision so far.
He refuted the news circulating that vehicles under 1000ccs will be allowed to be imported first. While answering the question raised by the media, the State Minister said that no vehicles can be imported until the economy is further strengthened.
A committee was appointed to look into the import of vehicles to the country. The committee is considering various parameters relating to vehicles imports, including which vehicles should be imported first, whether there is a shortage of vehicles in the country, whether the road system can cater to the available vehicles, and so on.
State Minister Siyambalapitiya said that the recommendations of the committee will be considered when taking decisions on vehicle imports. He said vehicle imports are a drain on foreign reserves and therefore no room can be left to damage the slowly improving economy.
The State Minister stressed that there is no truth in the news circulating, especially on social media, that the Government is going to allow vehicle imports soon.
“The Government is not in a position to allow vehicle imports at this juncture,” he said.
