North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has appeared in state media looking healthy, dismissing rumours and unverified claims that he had died following a brain hemorrhage.
The 42-year-old leader was featured in the state newspaper Rodong Sinmun viewing a clothes and footwear exhibition alongside his daughter. The appearance came just hours after Wanjun Xie, who identifies himself as the chairman of the banned Chinese Democratic Party and is based in the United States, claimed without evidence that Kim had been taken to a Beijing hospital in a coma and subsequently died.
Observers note that rumours regarding North Korea’s leadership are frequent due to the country’s extreme secrecy, which makes verifying information difficult. Wanjun Xie has previously made unverified claims, including speculations regarding Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s death. However, South Korean intelligence officials told the Yonhap news agency that there is no information to substantiate these latest reports, and no unusual security movements or refugee shifts have been observed along the Chinese border that would typically accompany such a political upheaval.
Experts suggest that these recurring rumours are largely driven by ongoing uncertainties surrounding North Korea’s dynastic succession. While South Korean intelligence believes Kim is grooming his young daughter who is thought to be around 13 years old as his successor, her youth and the fact that North Korea has never been ruled by a woman continue to fuel speculation and instability regarding the regime’s future.
