Northern Province schools will be upgraded under programme – Governor

Northern Province Governor P. S. M. Charles said that a special model plan will be implemented together with the Provincial Education Ministry and the central government to raise the standards of the school system in the North and other education programmes.

The Governor made this comment when she participated as the chief guest at a function held on behalf of Vavuniya Kanagarayankulam Maha Vidyalaya celebrating its hundredth anniversary.

She also opened the gateway of the school built at a cost of Rs.6 million. Financial provisions for this construction were provided by the government as well as past pupils of the school. Governor Charles said that it has been identified that about 190 schools in the Northern Province still remain closed also stated that schools that need to be opened from among them will be reopened and a special model programme to raise the standards of education of schoolchildren in the north will also be implemented. She said further that, apart from all other programmes in the North, highest priority will be given to education.

The reason for education in the North lagging behind is the war environment that existed and later, schools being used as refugee camps. Even the Kanagarayankulam Maha Vidyalaya is a place where refugee camps had been established. However, even under such circumstances, during the last few years in the immediate past it is a school that has come forward in education and external activities.

Invitees presented commemorative gifts to school children who had shown their talents in education and external activities during this function held on behalf of the school’s 100th anniversary.
