The Konichchankulama Tank, in Kakupadiyawa Village in Aanamaduwa, was recently rehabilitated and ceremoniously declared open in commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the National Savings Bank (NSB), with the contribution of the NSB Pensioner’s Society and under the direct supervision of the Department of Agrarian Development. This project is yet another stage of the series of programmes and activities conducted by the NSB Pensioner’s Society, every year.

With the restoration of the tank nearly 100 families became direct beneficiaries, while more than 2,000 villagers living in the area, can fulfill their daily water and sanitary requirements, using the water stored in the tank.

NSB General Manager-CEO Mrs. Shashi Kandambi was the Chief Guest, while a former NSB General Manager-CEO Dammika Perera, Mahakumbukkadawala Divisional Secretary, Ms. Nawam Udani, Puttalam District Deputy Commissioner of Agrarian Services, Samantha Pushpakumara, and Assistant Commissioner of Agrarian Services, Mrs. Sandhya Priyadarshani, graced the occasion as Special Guests.

NSB General Manager-CEO Mrs Shashi Kandambi addressing the gathering, said, “The village, temple, tank and stupa are the main elements of our rural community. It implied that the village, the smallest unit that builds the country, should be empowered by the religious background that promotes the discipline of the society and agricultural lifestyle that brings forth the economic strength. Also, an irrigation system and culture were developed to protect, save and store the water resource, and we should be aware that thousands of tanks were built to serve these purposes. An advanced irrigation industry existed, especially in the dry zone.

Accordingly, I believe that, this tank, which has been restored at a cost of approximately Rs. 6 million, following the practice of our ancestors, would be the economic power of the community in the area, and provide the water resource, required for the agriculture of the country, betterment of lives and a significant contribution towards the development of the local economy.

Even though the NSB was officially founded in 1972, the Bank originally boasts of a longstanding legacy of more than 190 years. We have been resilient in our mission as the safest and most trustworthy Bank in Sri Lanka, throughout our journey of more than 50 years.

Today, NSB stands as a sound financial institution with the largest number of accounts, and it is testimony to the trust placed in us by the people of Sri Lanka.”

Assistant General Manager Janaka Herath, Regional Manager Mrs. Kumari Jayasinghe, Anamaduwa Branch Manager Sarath Kumara, Puttalam Branch Manager Krishantha Dissanayake and Members of the NSB Pensioners’ Society attended the event.
