Officials of Monetary Authority of Singapore visit Sri Lanka to collaborate in the field of digital economy

The High Commissioner of Sri Lanka of Singapore Senarath Dissanayake met with the Chief Fintech Officer of the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) Sopnendu Mohanthy, and his team on June 21, 2024, at the Monetary Authority of Singapore prior to the visit of the Fintech delegation to Sri Lanka from June 25 to 27 to participate in the Digi Econ Global Investment Summit, organised by the Ministry of Technology of Sri Lanka.

The High Commissioner highlighted the significance of this visit to Sri Lanka, as the Digi Econ Global Investment Summit 2024 unveils Sri Lanka’s roadmap for tech-driven progress, exploring opportunities in cutting-edge fields alongside Sri Lanka’s commitment to sustainability and inclusivity. The High Commissioner also briefed the team on the programme that has been arranged by the High Commission during their stay in Sri Lanka.

The Fintech delegation comprises Chief Fintech Officer Sopnendu Mohanty Deputy Director. Alvinder Singh, Founder of Law Asia and Senior Advisor to the Board of Elevandi Dato Paul Supramaniam, and, Director of Global Marketing and Strategy in the International Engagement Unit of the President’s Office at Nanyang Technology University and Advisor to the Board of Elevandi Preeti Dawra.

The key objective of the delegation is to explore opportunities for cross border collaboration with the government of Sri Lanka and the academia to promote fintech in the digital economy, and advocate digital literacy, digital empowerment, and financial inclusivity.

At the Digi Econ Global Investment Summit, Chief of MAS Sopnendu Mohanty is expected to join the panel discussion titled “New Models of Investment Accelerating Digital Transformation” on the invitation extended by State Minister of Technology of Sri Lanka Kanaka Herath,.

The delegation is also scheduled to meet the President of Sri Lanka, to discuss possible collaborative opportunities in digital public infrastructure and global connectivity for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), and sustainable finance.

The delegation is also expected to hold discussions with the Chairman of the University Grants Commission and representatives from Sri Lankan universities to explore the possibility of developing a program to offer Masters and PhD scholarships to Sri Lankan students who are interested in studying digital financial technology at the Asian Institute of Digital Finance and Nanyang Technology University in Singapore.

Deputy Director of the Monetary Authority of Singapore Alvinder Singh, Senior Advisor of the Board of Elevandi Dato Paul Supramaniam, and Minister (Commercial) of the High Commission of Sri Lanka Yasantha Yaddehi, attended the meeting.
