Old Wesleyites Sports Club (OWSC) bounced back into recognition with an outstanding performance in the second week of matches of the SLR Under-24 League Rugby Tournament, which continued at the Thurstan College Grounds in Colombo.

After a disappointing start to their campaign last week, OWSC came out firing on all their cylinders to trounce Petersons Sports Club by a convincing margin of 60-0 and to register their first victory of the tournament.

This was a complete turnaround for the OWSC, who were at their best in all departments of the game as they showed their true potential by running down as many as 10 tries.

OWSC seem to have done all their homework and had brushed off all their weak areas following a 7-22 drubbing at the hands of Science ‘Maroons’ at this same venue last week.

One of the key factors for OWSC’s success was their halves combination of Sakith Perera and Johanne Ogbebar, who had a good understanding with all their executions throughout the game.

Perera always caused plenty of doubt in the minds of the Petersons SC’s defence with his superb dummies while Ogbebar was able to gain territorial advantage through some fine kicks to touch.

Even then, it took some time for OWSC to get their momentum as they used the first half to settle down and study their opponents before launching a massive attack after the break.

In fact, OWSC were able to cross the whitewash on as many as seven occasions in the second half in contrast to their three tries scored in the first 40 minutes of play.

Number eight Isuru Perera controlled the game beautifully in the set pieces as well as in the rucks and mauls and ended up scoring two tries having also initiated several scoring opportunities. He was well supported by the two flankers Yohan Philip and Mohamed Mirzan and with their outstanding contributions OWSC were always able to retain possession.

Meanwhile, Science ‘Maroons’ had the satisfaction of recording a massive 115-0 victory over the Field Force SC in another Under-24 match played on Saturday at the same venue.

Science ‘Maroons’ also became the second team to cross the 100-point mark in this tournament after the Western Province recorded a 119-0 victory against Uva Province last week at the Vincent Dias Stadium in Badulla.

This was also the second successive win for Science ‘Maroons’ after their success against the OWSC last week and now they are very much in contention to play in the Cup Championship final.

Science ‘Maroons’ went into half time while leading 54-0 and they eventually ended up scoring a staggering 17 tries out of which 15 were converted by their most reliable place-kicker and fly half Nadun Kaveesha.

In addition, winger Kavindu Dilshan scored a hat-trick of tries during the latter stages of the game, but the early damage was done by the number eight Tharusha Udayanga, Dinesh Pasindu and Sashin Munasinghe with the trio scoring two tries each.

Meanwhile, in the Inter-Provincial Under-24 Tournament, North Western defeated North Central 30-3 at the Maliyadeva College Grounds in Kurunegala while Southern outplayed Uva 51-0 at the Vincent Dias Stadium in Badulla.
