India beat Pakistan by massive 228 runs in their Asia Cup super round match at R.Premadasa Stadium Colombo on Monday after playing two days of Cricket. Some controversy arose from a few sections after providing an extra day for this encounter. As expected the match had been extended for the second day. India were 147/2 at the end of first day’s play and went on to pile up 356/2 in 50 overs after resuming play on second day. Pakistan were bundled out for just 128 from 32 overs after two of their players Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah did not in to the crease due to injuries.

The India-Pakistan match provides the 40th occasion of a One Day International played over two days in the history of the short format of the game after 52 years and 4640 games.
The first such instance was recorded in England between England and India at The Oval on 15-16th July,1974 where England posted an easy 6 wicket victory.
Since then England has staged 23 One Day Internationals which have been played for over two days followed by New Zealand (5), Sri Lanka (3), West Indies (2), Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Scotland (one each).
England (16) has also led the playing record for most two day games with West Indies (12), India & New Zealand (10 each), Pakistan (8), Australia (6) and Sri Lanka (4) being the other leading countries. In 2004, four such matches were played among member countries,the most for a calendar year.
The venue wise break up is Manchester (7) leads the tally with Birmingham (5), The London Oval (3), Leeds (3), Nottingham (2), Auckland (2), Christchurch (2) coming behind.
During the Prudential World Cup in 1979, Sri Lanka, an associate member country led by Bandula Warnapura gained a famous and surprising 47 run victory over India captained by Sirinivas Venkataraghavan at Manchester after playing two days of Cricket on June 16th and 18th (17th Sunday was a rest day) and paved the way for Test baptism and full membership of the ICC. The win was their first in One Day Internationals which came only in fifth attempt after making their debut in World Cup 1975.

India: 191(54.1) (Tony Opatha 3/31, Somachandra de Silva 3/29) by 47 runs.
In a rain hit encounter England led by Michael Vaughan defeated Sri Lanka led by Marvan Atapattu by 5 wickets on Duckworth/Lewis method in their ICC Champions Trophy match at The Rose Bowl, Southampton on September 17-18, 2004, by using the reserve day.
England: 251/7 (50) (Andrew Flintoff 104) beat
Sri Lanka: 95/5 (24) (target 145 in 24 overs) by 49 runs (D/L) method.
Sri Lanka has staged first such match on August 18-19, 2006 at Sinhalese Sports Club ground against India which ended as no result due to rain and bad light after using reserve day. India was led by present coach Rahul Dravid with Mahela Jayawardana as Sri Lanka captain in this encounter.

In December 10-11,2014 Sri Lanka led by Angelo Mathews fitted against England led by Alastair Cook in another thrilling encounter at Pallekele which was won by England during their 7 match one day series.

India’s 228 run win over Pakistan was the best victory in terms of runs in a match played over two days and it beats the previous best of 152 by England against Zimbabwe at Birmingham on September 10,11-2004.
Surprisingly umpire Ruchira Palliyaguruge officiated in two matches out of three which staged in Sri Lanka for over two days along with Australian Rod Tucker (Pallekele-2014) and New Zealander Chris Gaffaney (R.Premadasa Stadium- 2023).
