The online education system that was introduced prior to the COVID pandemic was fine tuned and streamlined during the pandemic rising its significance and value, said Chairman, Canterbury School of Tourism and Hospitality (Private) Limited, Ezraad Bathusha at their first convocation in Cinnamon Grand recently.

He said that this can be termed as a silver lining that emerged during the pandemic to the education sector. “Prior to the pandemic most online education systems were done with less interaction but during the lockdowns there was face to face communication between the teacher and student.”

He said that Canterbury College, during the pandemic, commenced their education by adopting several novel communication methods not depriving the students of their education. He recalled that Canterbury College commenced operation in Colombo in September 2018 and was initially set up as a vocational training institute targeting those in remote areas of the local community, providing them with the training and qualifications necessary to secure employment in the tourism and hospitality sector, both in Sri Lanka and overseas.

“Unfortunately, shortly after launch, the Easter bombing happened and the tourist industry took a big hit. Thereafter, just when things were picking up, the world was hit with C-19 which more or less crippled the hospitality industry in Sri Lanka and the rest of the world.”

Bathusha based in the UK is involved in a series of education advancements linking several Middle Eastern students with Education institutes in London.

“In order to diversify our offer and bring value to the Sri Lankan economy through our stakeholder links with the UK, we launched Ofqual accredited Diploma, and Post Graduate Diploma programmes offered through OTHM UK.”

The operation currently offers the Post Graduate Diploma programmes and has just under one hundred students. Those who complete the PG Diploma can progress on to an MBA dissertation stage with a UK university or any local institute offering an MBA in Sri Lanka. Canterbury College currently offers PG Diplomas in: Tourism & Hospitality Management, Strategic Management & Leadership and Education Management and Leadership.

“We have recently launched our Language Centre offering IELTS, French, German, Japanese and Mandarin,” he said.

During their convocation successful students who passed their academic programs were presented with Tourism and Hospitality Management and Strategic Management and Leadership certificates. In addition Alumni membership cards too were offered to Deshani Liyanage, Gamini Wijekoon, Salinda Abeyakon and Chirath Ranatunga.
