Finance State Minister Shehan Semasinghe stated that payments will be made next month to 960,000 family units belonging to the risky and transitional category in the first phase of Aswesuma welfare benefit programme.

Speaking to the media in Anuradhapura yesterday the State Minister said that a survey to start the second phase of the programme will be started by next month and according to this, relief benefits will be given to 2.4 million family units from July.

According to the President’s instructions, reports have been submitted to Parliament to approve payments to 960,000 family units in the risky and transitional category, he said. Speaking on the political situation he said that constitutionally only the President has the ability to dissolve Parliament and the statements made by other people about such matters are irrelevant.

He said most of these statements about Parliament being dissolved are being spread with petty political intentions.

He noted that this year’s election will be an economy-based election and people will have to make very prudent decisions.

“The market economic process in Sri Lanka is being operated under the leadership of President Ranil Wickremesinghe and whatever statements the Opposition Leader makes regarding the economy, the Opposition Leader has no knowledge about the economy and what other option is available to the Opposition Leader other than working with the International Monetary Fund,” the State Minister added.
