Former President Maithripala Sirisena said that there was only three months left for him to collect Rs.100 million to pay which the Supreme court ordered him to pay as damages to the victims of the Easter Sunday attacks.

Sirisena said these days with the support of friends and relatives he is working hard to collect the required money as three months have already passed from the 6 months’ time given to him to make the payments.

“I am not a person who has the means to pay a compensation of Rs.100 million. I have to appeal to my friends and well-wishers to give me whatever amount possible to pay the fine,” Sirisena said.

Addressing a gathering in Baddegama, he said this attack took place when this country was moving towards democracy. “The Supreme Court ruling clearly says that no one had informed me of the intelligence information over the Easter Sunday attacks,” he said.

The person who has appointed the President has committed a serious mistake and the President should also be held responsible for that.

He said he had neither robbed nor bombed but he had to pay the money due to the Court Order. The first thing is that I respect the law. I am a person who bows my head to the Court’s decisions,” he said.

He said he was unknown of what would happen if he failed to pay the fine on time as he was not a legal expert.
