Opposition signs NCM against Speaker

The main Opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) with several other parties supporting it, decided to file a No Confidence Motion (NCM) against the Speaker yesterday, citing that he had violated the trust placed on him by Parliament and the country’s Constitution.

The SJB decided to present the No Confidence Motion against the Speaker alleging that the Speaker has acted in a partisan manner, violated the standing orders of Parliament and the Constitution and the independence and dignity of the office of the Speaker, violated the privileges and rights of the members of the Opposition and neglected his responsibilities.

The SJB also alleged that the Speaker has granted approval for the Online Safety Act in an unlawful manner.

Apart from SJB leader and Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, Chief Opposition Whip and SJB MP Lakshman Kiriella and SJB National Organiser MP Tissa Attanayake, former members of the Government who are now allied with the SJB, such as Prof. G.L. Peiris, Chandima Weerakkody and Shan Wijayalal de Silva signed the motion at the Opposition Leader’s office yesterday.
