Opposition will not allow to interrupt X-Press Pearl legal process – Sajith

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa told Parliament yesterday that the Opposition will not allow to interrupt the legal process with regard to the X-Press Pearl disaster. Even though the MT New Diamond disaster occurred before the X-Press Pearl disaster and the oil spill caused great environmental damage, the government did not learn any lessons from it.

The Opposition Leader further said that when X-Press Pearl was destroyed, even its damage has been estimated incorrectly.

When this was questioned by the Parliamentary Committees, the relevant agencies accepted that this damage occurred from Negombo, Puttalam, Mannar, Panadura, Kalutara, Galle, Matara, Hambantota to the East Coast. Therefore, it is questionable whether these government agencies are working properly and honestly in carrying out these investigations. However, the Opposition Leader pointed out that Parliament has the right to question the chain of legal actions regarding these destructions in a manner that they do not prejudice the lease process.

The Leader of the Opposition further said that since the current estimated amount is calculated only for a small part of the destroyed ship, there is a right to question this and the government has not yet learned lessons from the Mt New Diamond incident as well as the X-Press Pearl incident.
