Organisers of fake singing competition defraud public of Rs. 50 Mn
A group of people who held a superstar song competition in Mannar using the name of a fake radio channel have fled after defrauding a sum of Rs. 50 million.
This competition had been organised stating that the youth of the Northern Province including Mannar will be given a mandate to become superstars and the 10 finalists will be awarded prizes of hundreds of thousands of rupees.
More than 5,000 young people from many areas including Vavuniya, Mannar, Mullaitivu, Kilinochchi and Jaffna had entered the competition, responding to a notice and they had been asked to deposit Rs. 17,500 to a bank account named by the organizers.
A few programmes of the first round had been advertised through a Facebook page and the organisers had specified an entry fee of Rs. 25,000 for those who wished to participate in the second round.
Also, a young woman from Trincomalee had rented a bus for Rs. 100,000 and paid Rs. 25,000 as entry fee to come to this competition to sing and later when her hopes had been dashed, she had gone back to Trincomalee after lodging a complaint with the Police.
Although a large number of complaints have been received by the Mannar Police and other Police stations, regarding this, it has not yet been possible to take into custody the organisers of this fake superstar singing competition.
Even though some 1,000 persons had turned up at the relevant place in Mannar to view the finals of the second round of the competition, the organisers had not come and their phones had been disconnected, according to people of Mannar.
As a result of this incident, people had realised that these superstar competition organisers had been a group of racketeers and had then complained to the Police.
The organisers had sold a ticket for Rs. 1,000 each for spectators who wanted to come and view the competition. The organisers who had collected about Rs. 50 million in this manner, had fled Mannar.
