We decided to compete in the forthcoming presidential election separately for the betterment of the public. If we could appoint a candidate who can secure the majority of the floating votes, we have a chance of winning this election, said the National organiser of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa.

He said this during a SLPP meeting held in Baddegama, Wanduraba.

In addition he said, “Our primary concern is not the ones who left us but our main opponent Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB). However recent surveys indicate that most of the parties are polling anything between 18% – 22%, and no party so far has been able to surpass the 25% mark till now. Personally for me, allying with Ranil would be the most beneficial. As a party, we tried to ally with the government to face the election”

“As the National organiser of the SLPP, I cannot support the United National Party (UNP) because doing so would cost us a significant amount of leftist votes. We have discussed the pros and cons of allying”.

Rajapaksa also expressed their concern about the lack of clarity regarding conducting the parliamentary election and the nomination system and said “How can we move forward after the election without an agreement on this?”

He added, “President Ranil Wickremesinghe will be independent only for this election. After the election, his independency will be over”.

The event was attended by several politicians including State Minister of Agriculture Mohan Priyadarshana De Silva.
