Over 107 kg heroin incinerated at Puttalam cement factory

According to a Court order, 107 kg of heroin seized during a raid in 2019 with a value of over Rs. 3,210 million was destroyed yesterday (14). The heroin stock was destroyed in Insee cement factory incinerators in Palaviya, Puttalam under high temperature before the Puttalam Magistrate.

This 107 kg of heroin was taken into the custody of the Police Narcotics Bureau in 2019. In a raid conducted by the PNB, nine suspects were arrested with 107 kg of heroin and another one kg and 104 grams of drug powder suspected to be heroin. They were sentenced to life imprisonment on October 12 after being convicted in the Colombo High Court. The High Court Judge has ordered the destruction of the heroin stock.

Accordingly, steps were taken to take the relevant heroin stock from the Western Province High Court premises to the cement factory in Puttalam. Acting Inspector General Deshabandu Tennakoon said that there is a possibility of destroying the drugs even before the completion of the proceedings. Tennakoon also said that it is possible to destroy more than 1,000 kilograms of heroin in a few days.

The relevant heroin stock was taken from Colombo to Puttalam under Police Special Task Force protection under the supervision of the Acting Inspector General Tennakoon and the heroin stock was destroyed under high temperature at the cement factory in Puttalam. Acting Inspector General of Police Deshabandu Tennakoon, Special Task Force’s Senior Deputy Inspector General Varuna Jayasundara, Police Narcotics Bureau Director SSP Hemal Prashantha, National Board of Control of Dangerous Drugs, Government Analyst’s office, Central Environment Authority, Wildlife Department and Judicial Office Board officials were present during the burning operation of the drugs.
