Over 15,000 cases on institutions that have defrauded EPF payments

0 0

It has been revealed in the Government Accounts Committee that there are currently 15,000 cases pending against institutions that have defaulted on the payment of provident funds.

Also, the committee’s attention has been drawn to the fact that nearly 5,000 cases are inactive by December 31, 2021, and the officials of the Labour Ministry have stated before the committee that factors such as the absence of the relevant institutions at those addresses or the departure of the board of directors have affected this.

Accordingly, the Chairman of the Government Accounts Committee has ordered that a report with all relevant details be submitted to the Government Accounts Committee regarding the employers who have defaulted in the provident fund payments in all the districts. The Committee on Government Accounts met at the Parliament Complex under its Chairman, Minister of State Lasantha Alagiyawanna and these matters were revealed there.

Attention was also drawn to the excessive time spent in submitting applications due to deficiencies in the applicant’s information in obtaining welfare funds. The committee pointed out that there is no system for the public to check the applications before coming to submit them.

According to the amendment made to the Labour Act in 2019, all factories should be registered in the Labour Office but it has not yet been done properly. It was discussed in the committee that although this registration should be done for the safety of workers and factory workers, it is not done properly. Officials said that these activities, which were delayed due to the prevailing Covid situation and economic crisis, will be expedited.

The Committee advised to speed up the work as only 4,000 of the 32,000 existing factories are currently registered. If the officials of the Labour Department are not enough to obtain this data, other officials have to be appointed to prepare a programme and report on it within a month.
