The Minister said that several problems have been identified concerning the cremation of COVID remains.
Some crematoriums are in a very dilapidated condition with obsolete generators and having to undergo sudden power outages, poor maintenance of gas resorvers to be used during emergencies and crematorium employees not being provided protective kits to perform their duty properly.
State Minister Ranasinghe said that there are certain instances that the remains of COVID deceased have been brought to crematoriums by hospitals without following proper safety guidelines.
He added that the main reason for this is that there is no proper coordination between crematoriums and hospitals.
The State Minister said that he expects to discuss this matter with the Health Minister shortly.
