The Police during a special operation arrested 2,121 persons for various crimes, Police Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said.
Two-thousand-and-twenty male suspects and 101 female suspects had been arrested.
SSP Thalduwa also said that various narcotics were also seized during the operation. He said 12 suspects were held under detention orders for further inquiries and 133 were sent for rehabilitation. Also investigations have started regarding the assets owned by five suspects.
The Police launched the special operation starting on Sunday, especially to curb the activities of organized gangs and drug traffickers. The special operation will go on until December 23 covering all Police Divisions in the island. In the raid conducted in the Western Province, 415 grams of heroin, 500 grams of ice, 778 grams of cannabis and 35 kilograms of hashish have been taken into custody by the police and in the total of 907 raids conducted in that province, 859 suspects including 47 female suspects have been arrested.
In the Southern Province, Police seized 135 grams of heroin, 12 grams of ice, 38 cannabis plants, and 845 grams of cannabis. During raids conducted in the Southern Province, 197 male suspects and eight female suspects were arrested.
