Over 500 lecturers owe Rs. 2 Bn to state – COPE

It was revealed at the COPE committee recently that nearly Rs.2 billion rupees should be charged from the lecturers who did not return to Sri Lanka after going abroad to pursue higher education. It was revealed that 617 lecturers who went abroad, only 84 have refunded their bursaries while 533 have defaulted their payments.

The COPE Committee recommended the relevant authorities to inform the COPE Committee within one month about the actions to be taken regarding the lecturers who have defaulted on payment.

The COPE members said that if the lecturers do not make the relevant payments, they should take action to recover this money from the guarantors.
