Possible to use organs of brain-dead patients while receiving treatment:
Registration programme for donation of organs was held in Peradeniya :

Peradeniya Teaching Hospital Director Dr. Arjuna Thilakaratne said that around 5,000 patients who have been recommended by doctors to undergo an organ transplant to sustain life, die every year because they cannot find the organs.

He says that it is possible to use the organs of brain-dead patients while receiving treatment in a hospital to save the lives of these patients, but due to the ignorance of the people regarding the possibility of donating them, the organs of around 2,000 brain-dead people are buried with them.

The director said this in an awareness programme regarding the possibility of giving the body organs of a dead person for transplants. The awareness programme was held yesterday (4) at the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital. A registration programme for the donation of organs was held and Dr.Arjuna Thilakaratne, Peradeniya University Director Prof.Arinda Dharmapala along with Wellawatte Sheelagaveshi Thera, also signed their consent.

The director also said that although there are organ transplant facilities in many hospitals in this country, the main problem faced by doctors is finding the required organs for the patients.

He said that when a person is brain dead, his or her organs can be transplanted with the permission of the patient’s next of kin.

He also emphasized that taking the organs of a person who has expressed his wish to donate organs for transplantation while alive does not require the consent of the next of kin.

Peradeniya University Vice-Chancellor Prof.M.D.Lamawansa, Peradeniya Teaching Hospital’s Surgeon Prof.Arinda Dharmapala, Surgeon Dr.Buddhika Dasanayake, Nephrology Specialist Dr. Rajith Abeysekara, Anaesthetist Dr.Senani Samarasinghe, Haepatology Specialist Dr.Chatura Lakmal Piyaratne and Dr.Amali Jayasinghe and others participated in the event.
