Over 75,000 Kgs of big onion bulbs to be vernalized for Yala

The Agriculture Department has directed 75,000 Kgs of big onion bulbs for vernalization in Nuwara Eliya for big onion cultivation in 2024 Yala Season. This is expected to yield 75,000 Kgs of true big onion seeds.

This vernalization process is essential to produce more flowers from the bulbs by vernalization to produce big onion seedlings. Bulbs should be stored for about three weeks at a cool temperature of 10-15 degrees centigrade before planting. Therefore, big onion bulbs have been sent from Dambulla to Nuwara Eliya for vernalization activities.

The Agriculture Department also mentions that it is planned to cultivate 2,500 hectares of big onions in the Yala Season of 2024 with these big onion seeds.

The Agriculture Department also emphasizes that 3,500 hectares of big onions were cultivated in the Yala Season of 2023, but due to rain before harvesting, the crops were not harvested properly.
