Speaking at a media conference held at the Government Information Department, Dr Ginige urged the public to get the COVID vaccine without any delay.
A very small minority of people over the age of 60 have not yet been vaccinated.
The government will continue to vaccinate by setting up vaccination centers, and it is important that all those over 60 get vaccinated as soon as possible, said specialist Dr. Samitha Ginige.
Dr. Ginige noted that the two main objectives of vaccination are to reduce mortality and reduce the transmission of the disease by adding that more than 77 percent of COVUD victims are over 60 years of age.
The doctor said that 22 percent of deaths between the ages of 30 and 59, 65 percent – 70 percent of deaths are due to chronic diseases and that all those over the age of 60 who are at high risk for covid deaths should be vaccinated.
